Lawnmarket is currently closed to traffic because of road reconstruction work, which is due to finish in July 2025.
Following the end of the main construction work, we will remove the fencing and the street will become a pedestrian and cycle zone only, staying closed to vehicles. This is part of the Summertime Streets closures and restrictions to ensure the safety and comfort of visitors to the area.
A servicing, loading and unloading window will be available between 6.30pm to 10.30am every day and will be one-way access from Johnston Terrace to George IV Bridge. We will issue more information on Summertime Streets soon.
Experimental Traffic Regulation Order
Following the information session in April 2025, we are working to put an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) in place to restrict vehicle access on Lawnmarket and Castlehill.
We plan to start the trial once the busy summer period is over and Summertime Street restrictions are lifted.
The ETRO means we can test the impacts of restricting vehicles on Lawnmarket and Castlehill.
This will follow the Summertime Streets restrictions, and we will update you with more information nearer the time, letting you know how you can comment on the ETRO.
The ETRO restrictions will be between
- 10.30am and 7.30pm, Monday to Saturday
- 12.30pm and 7.30pm, Sunday
and to support these operating times, we will make changes to Johnston Terrace and Castle Terrace
- Restricted access to Johnston Terrace for large vehicles when pedestrian and cycle zone is in operation
- Remove existing coach parking on Johnston Terrace
- Coach pick-up and drop-off on Castle Terrace
- Taxi and private hire pick-up and drop-off areas on Johnston Terrace
- Additional blue badge parking on Johnston Terrace
- Public and resident parking on Johnston Terrace
- Turning area for smaller vehicles including taxis and vans on Johnston Terrace
Existing resident parking bay numbers will not reduce under the trial. In fact there will be an increase in resident and shared use parking. The locations may change in some cases. For example, to allow for coach drop off and pick up on Castle Terrace these bays wiill move to the other side of the street.
Essential vehicles for 天美传媒 Castle and to allow events to happen will still be able to access to Lawnmarket and Castlehill.
